The Learning Center at NAM helps adults gain the necessary skills to chart a career path that will lead to financial stability. Through partnerships with Lone Star College and the Harris County Department of Education, adults can learn English, prepare to take the GED exam, take Adult Basic Education courses, and participate in vocational training programs.
Classes are open to all Houston residents and are offered free of charge or at reduced cost. NAM also collaborates with the Spring Independent School District on educational opportunities for families through Even Start.

GED Preparation & ESL Classes
The Learning Center offers free GED preparation and ESL classes taught by highly qualified teachers through the Harris County Department of Education. These education courses offer adults the opportunity to gain the skills needed to take advantage of better job opportunities or move into higher education. Day-time and evening classes are available. Financial Literacy Classes
Free financial literacy classes are offered at the Learning Center on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Classes are taught by the Women’s Resource Center of Greater Houston and based on curriculum from the FDIC series, Money Smart. The series consists of four classes, Money Matters, Pay Yourself First, To Your Credit, and Financial Recovery. The series begins each year in January and repeats every four months. There is no cost or registration required.
As part of United Way’s THRIVE program, vocational scholarships sponsoring continuing education at Lone Star College and NAM are awarded to qualifying adults for training in careers such as welding, phlebotomy, certified nursing assistant, administrative assistant, accounting assistant, HVAC, and sterile processing technician. Participants of the NAM THRIVE program receive free tuition, books, financial coaching and job placement assistance. Classes at NAM are held on Saturdays to accommodate working students.
THRIVE vocational training opportunities offered at NAM include:
• Administrative Professional
• Certified Nurse Aid (CNA)
• Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPT) – Next session starts September 22; Registration deadline is September 13.
To qualify, applicants must:
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
• Have a GED or high school diploma (Students currently enrolled in NAM’s GED classes will be considered)
• Have a desire to enter one of the sponsored career fields
• Earn at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines
